| The Victoria BC naval community of Esquimalt is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on three sides. The main entrance by vehicle into Esquimalt is the Johnson Street Bridge, we call "Big Blue". The seaside naval community is just 5 blocks north of the Inner Harbour in downtown Victoria. |

Esquimalt is the home port of Canada's Pacific Fleet. From this port, the naval fleet sets out to sea to assist in international peace keeping efforts. Esquimalt's quick proximity to the open seas makes this secluded natural harbour a perfect port for the fleet to operate from. For decades the area has been a major port for Victoria's marine traffic; ever since the early 1800's when it was a staging point for the British Royal Navy. The port of Esquimalt is important to Canada and is a big part of Victoria's economy but the community has other aspects than the Pacific Fleet. This harbour community is proud of its scenic water walkways and coastlines. Some of the walkways are lined with comfortable benches overlooking views of swans and ducks. On most days you can see people walking their dogs enjoying the tranquil surroundings. One of the more popular parks to visit in the is Saxe Point Park because of the wide ranging ocean views of the Victoria Olympic Peninsula and the distant horizons. This Victoria community has an older downtown core with unique antique shops, retail stores, restaurant dining, a challenging golf course and plenty of marine scenery. It is the older part of Victoria. |
